General Discussions / 2013 Robot Naming Thread
« Last post by Brennan D on February 14, 2013, 09:46:41 PM »
So its about time to get our robot named. Any appropriate suggestions for the robot name are welcomed.

For robot ideas you can look into the early robot naming thread that Ben made a while back.

Some of our past robot names have been:
Early Blue Lightning years: Kate Gleason, KG-2, KG-3, KG-4, (KG = Kate Gleason)

2009: Karel-lyn - both a tribute to Bootsie (Carolyn Booton) and the infamous robot program used in Comp Sci 1 that can only turn left.

2010: Uncle Ralph - tribute to a retiring advisor, Mr. Breese, who was famous for saying, "Get your mom, dad or your uncle Ralph to sign this..."

2011: Jemo - The Kenyan name for Jim Nowak, the Fairport teacher and coach who had died in a car accident in Kenya that year

2012: Darth Raider - partially named based on the robots appearance, mostly a random suggestion to fit the team name by a Freshman

EDIT: The suggestions will be voted and selected on Saturday evening

It's a giant spider robot you can ride
Like sit on it and control it.
Robot.
Spider.
Ride.
When are we building one?

Do you think the robot could be colored yellow?

Also Mrs. Boyum has been called the "Iron Angel." That might be fitting to a robot.

agreement with dan! the two pontoons and the angled climber would give it a remarkably similar shape also

I like the name Serenity.
It's named after the ship from the Firefly series, which is one of my favorite sci-fi shows.
Second, I think it really sums up what we need in Fairport in 2013. Not just Blake, but Mrs. Boyum, the firefighters in Webster, the Sandy Hook kids and all the other tragedies we've experienced recently - I think we need some Serenity to get us through these difficult times.

General Discussions / protypes
« Last post by crazyben123 on January 13, 2013, 05:10:46 PM »
hey team,
this is a reply to mr.k's email. so i personaly think that we have spent a good enough time on protyping and that we should just go with what we have. im not saying that the radial shooter is better then the linear shooter im just saying that all the time we are spending on the linear shooter could be spent on other things. for example the hopper and loading mechanizm havent even been thought about too much.
i beleive that on monday what we should do is but minor changes into the radial shooter to make it better. and i think that the people on the linear shooter should either help eric deal with the climbing mechanizm or come up with ideas for the hopper and loader. but im fine with giving linear shooter people monday to get it working, but i think that if it isnt working and going as good as the radial then we should scrap it and continue. most teams finish protyping on day three and so i think we are just wasting our time now. i personaly am gonna start drawing a final design on solidworks just incase we do choose radial so that we can catch up a little bit. but that doesnt mean we have to do radial. but so please tell me your thoughts on all this.

joystick controlled robot arm

meant to be put on wheelchairs to help disable people, but I know WPI is attaching one to a robot for other tasks

this one terrifies Dan
it's a flexible arm based off an elephant's trunk

Baxter - a factory robot that can be "programmed" by nontechnical people and is relatively cheap
(part of an effort to bring manufacturing back to America instead of China)
We're getting one at WPI to complement our PR2 bot
